Ringtone Sales in the USA Start to Decline
Broadcast Music (BMI), the U.S. performing right organization has published its annual mobile music market projections for 2008 and figures for 2007. BMI projects that ringbacktones will surpass $210 million in U.S. retail sales during calendar year 2008, up 50% from BMI's 2007 market estimate of $140 million. TDC Mobile says that it is the first mobile operator to launch 24-7 MusicShop's 'dual delivery' mobile music download service. The new service enables TDC Mobile customers to download music tracks to their phone and receive simultaneous delivery to an online account. The music can then be downloaded to a PC and burned or transfered to another device. more

UK Leads in Mobile Music Consumption
M:Metrics has released its findings on the audience for mobile music in the USA and Western Europe. The measurement firm found that the UK boasts the highest percentage of mobile subscribers who used their mobile device as a music player in the month of July. At three percent, the volume of British mobile music consumers is higher than the Spanish (2.8%), U.S. (0.7%) and German (1.4%) audiences.

Japanese operator orders music platform
Coding Technologies says that Japan's KDDI Corp. has selected MPEG-4 aacPlus for use in their new mobile music download service, EZ "Chaku-Uta Full." With service starting in November, KDDI will initially provide the service on handset models from Toshiba, Hitachi, Sanyo, and Casio. KDDI selected aacPlus, also known as HE AAC, to speed downloads, to reduce network costs, and to store more music on the handsets. more
