Sony Ericsson Shows Off New Walkman Phone

Sony Ericsson has shown off another Walkman branded mobile phone, and a Wireless Home Audio System. The W705 features the same sound quality as the W980 Walkman phone which was rated "best audio experience" in a trial conducted in Germany by TESTfactory. The W705 includes standard Walkman features such as the music recognition application TrackID, SensMe, for matching your mood to the music and Shake control to change tracks with the flick of your hand.  more

Music Phones Surpass ½ Billion Units Shipped in 2007

MultiMedia Intelligence reports the worldwide unit shipments of music phones exceeded ½ billion units in 2007, outnumbering shipments of personal media players like the iPod by almost 300 million units. In 2011, over half of all mobile phones can be considered music phones with 941 million units shipped. MultiMedia Intelligence defines a music phone as a phone with two features: (1) Music codec functionality: MP3, AAC, etc. and (2) memory slot which allows for a full featured music experience by allowing the user to carry a personal music library. This is really only possible with expandable memory.  more

20% of Subscribers Are Listening to Music on Their Mobile Phones

The rise in music-phones has spurred adoption of mobile music consumption across the United States and Western Europe, reports M:Metrics. The firm reports that sideloading accounts for 83 percent of mobile music usage across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. Among other methods, sharing music outpaces full-track mobile downloading in the majority of these markets.  more

Motorola Shows off 9 New Phones

Vodafone UK Offering Unlimited Music Downloads

Vodafone UK has announced that its customers will have unlimited access to over a million tracks from all the major record labels, as well as leading independents, on a range of new handsets for Christmas. Through an exclusive agreement with Omnifone, the UK based mobile music company, Vodafone will roll out their MusicStation, giving customers the ability to download tracks from Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, EMI Music and Warner Music Group direct to their handsets, even while on the move. Customers will be able to sign up for unlimited downloads from MusicStation for £1.99 (US$4) per week. The MusicStation service will be accessed through Vodafone live! on a wide range of music handsets.  more

Worldwide Mobile Gaming Revenue to Grow 50 Percent in 2007

As consumer awareness grows and publishers release more content, worldwide mobile gaming end-user revenue will grow from US$2.9 billion in 2006 to US$9.6 billion in 2011, according to Gartner.
