Orange Sprinkles Some Monkey Magic Over its PrePay Service
Orange UK has announced a new PrePay tariff that offers free music streamed to their mobile phone each time they top up their account. Aimed primarily at the youth market, the so-called "Monkey" tariff has been created with 16-24 year olds in mind tapping into the elements of teen and 'twenty somethings' lifestyle choices. As well as free music, Monkey offers customers free texts, allows for playlists to be shared on social networks, along with advertising from relevant brands direct to their mobile. more

Record High for Mobile Music Downloads in UK
The UK's mobile music market is continuing to exhibit strong growth with a record number of downloads for May (1.72 million), reports GfK. So far in 2009 each month has registered at least 1.5 million music downloads and the market is still growing at an impressive rate in volume terms (April and May 09 were 21% up on 08). more
Telecom New Zealand Launches Mobile Music Store
Telecom New Zealand has launches what it says is the country's largest mobile music store, offering over 3.2 million music tracks. The Telecom Music Store includes a 'What's Fresh' zone, the record labels' top picks of the latest tracks to hit the scene, a 'What's Hot' zone, a top 20 list of Telecom's best selling songs, as well as high-spec graphics, bios and photos of key artists and albums. more

SingTel Launches Unlimited Mobile Music Service
Singapore based mobile network operator, SingTel has alunched a free mobile music download service for its contract customers. The service, branded SingTel AMPed, has been developed in partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG) and offers music videos and pre-release albums in addition to conventional music downloads. more

USA Ringback Tones to Grow to $235 Million in 2009
Music performing rights organization, Broadcast Music (BMI) has published its annual mobile music market revenue projections for 2009 and finalized its earlier figures for 2008. BMI projects that ringback tones will surpass $235 million in U.S. retail sales during calendar year 2009, up 15% from BMI's 2008 market estimate of $205 million and 68% from BMI's 2007 estimate of $140 million. BMI estimates that more than 10 million U.S. subscribers are signed up for ringback-tone services with their wireless carriers. Ringback-tone services have an industry-wide average penetration rate of approximately 4%. Subscriber penetration by carrier for ringback tones ranges from less than 2% to a high of 9%. more
