Over Quarter of Young Canadians Using Mobile Internet Services
Canadians are becoming captivated by "mobile surfing" - increasingly accessing the web from their cellphones and smartphones daily. Polling conducted by Ipsos-Reid on behalf of Rogers Wireless showed that 26 per cent of wirelessly connected Canadians aged 18-34 are accessing the web from their mobile devices everyday, and of that, 65 per cent are browsing from their mobiles multiple times a day. more

Mobile Internet, multimedia and mapping capture 40% of smartphone face time
Hannu Verkasalo, who has the public examination of his doctoral dissertation at Helsinki University of Technology on April 17th, says that "the usage of new smartphone applications, including the mobile Internet, games, multimedia and map applications, has been increasing among smartphone users and reaches already 40% of total face time". However, most of the usage is still based on voice and text messaging. more

Slower Replacement Cycle to Shrink Taiwan's Mobile Phone Market in 2009
Taiwan's mobile phone market is forecast to shrink by 9.3% to around 6.4 million units. The Taipei-based Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) puts the shrinkage down to slower handset replacements due to the economic downturn. Some 80% of the Taiwanese market depends on replacement sales. more

Upwards view: Linux is losing ground
The upwards view of netbooks starts with netbooks and looks up to laptops. It
leads to two conclusions. First, the laptop market is becoming increasingly
complex, with market segments catered for by a growing variety of low-cost
netbooks and laptops. Second, after a strong start, Linux netbooks have now been
overtaken by Windows netbooks and Linux is lagging increasingly behind in terms
of sales - although Linux's performance in the netbook segment is still
outstanding compared to its overall performance in the desktop market.

Consumers View MIDs as Cell Phone Replacements
In November 2008 ABI Research carried out a survey of more than 1000 adult consumers in the United States, aimed at identifying their attitudes to netbooks and Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs). MIDs have been proposed by some as cell phone replacements. Does the public agree? In this survey, almost half did, lending support to models incorporating cellular voice, while 34% said they would continue to use a cellular handset. more
