United Arab Emirates (UAE) mobile network operator, Etisalat has launched an upgraded Mobile IM (MIM) service powered by Colibria's Instant Messaging & Presence Service (IMPS). Etisalat's new MIM service, Etisalat Messenger, not only enables subscribers to communicate with both individuals and groups via MIM, but also incorporates Presence to allow subscribers to publish their presence status, picture and mood to their contacts. more

A report is indicating that global consumer spending on mobile messaging services, such as SMS, MMS, mobile email and mobile instant messaging will rise at a 6.4% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2008 and 2013 to reach $130 billion. Strategy Analytics says that the addition of 1 billion mobile phone users in developing cellular markets will stimulate continued SMS volume and revenue growth. Similarly, rising consumer demand for email and instant messaging access on mobile devices in developed fixed internet markets will drive growth in spending on mobile messaging. more

The availability of Presence information - status text, availability, mood and even potentially location - within mobile messaging services, such as mobile instant messaging, would drive UK mobile users to communicate more regularly, a survey by Colibria (which sells presence based services) has revealed. The survey of 2,000 online respondents in Britain found that over 80% of respondents interested in mobile instant messaging (MIM) would be more likely to chat with contacts - friends, family and colleagues - on their mobile phone if they could see their availability or mood, for example. more
