Etisalat Upgrades Mobile Instant Messaging Service

United Arab Emirates (UAE) mobile network operator, Etisalat has launched an upgraded Mobile IM (MIM) service powered by Colibria's Instant Messaging & Presence Service (IMPS). Hutchison Whampoa backed mobile phone manufacturer, INQ Mobile has released data on usage of its first phone, the INQ1 on the Hutchison 3G UK network. The company's handset was built from the ground up with social media and internet services at its core. An average of 65% of INQ1 customers are using Facebook, with the majority of users accessing once a day or more.  more

Lack of Education Restricts Growth of Mobile Instant Messaging

Research released today by instant messaging vendor, ProcessOne, has revealed that 60% of mobile users would send less text messages if they were better educated about how to use mobile instant messaging (IM) services. Despite many more of today's mobile handsets having IM capability only 35% of the users surveyed currently used mobile IM with text messaging remaining the dominant communications medium.  more

Worldwide Messaging Revenues set to exceed US$224 billion by 2013

A new report from Portio Research focused on mobile messaging has suggested that SMS will continue to be the cash cow of mobile data revenues for some time to come. Traffic volumes and revenues continue to confound predictions and are expected to keep growing throughout the global economic downturn. Indeed the whole mobile messaging industry worth US$130 billion in 2008 is predicted to be worth US$224 billion by 2013, 60 percent of non-voice service revenues.  more

Business Customers’ Mobile IM Adoption More About Familiarity than Mobility

In a new White Paper, ABI Research reports that mobile IM adoption is negatively correlated to mobility. According to principal analyst Dan Shey, "The greatest adopters of mobile IM are T-Mobile subscribers whose demographic profile shows a high percentage who only work in an office. As office work typically requires PC access, mobile IM adoption appears more related to familiarity with IM through the PC rather than mobility itself."  more

LG to Embed Social Networking Application into Indian Handsets

RockeTalk, a provider of mobile social applications, has announced a partnership with LG Electronics India in which the RockeTalk mobile social networking application will be pre-loaded on all new LG KT610 and KF750 (Secret) mobile phone models. In 2007, operators worldwide generated more than US$800 billion in mobile revenues. A report from Portio Research now expects this to to reach US$1,094.9 billion by year-end 2012, growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 6.4 percent. The US$1-trillion mark is expected to be reached by year-end 2011.  more
