Worldwide PDA and Smartphone Shipments Market Grew 57 Percent
Worldwide shipments of PDAs and smartphones combined totaled 42.1 million units in the first half of 2006, a 57% increase from the same period last year, according to Gartner. Smartphone shipments bolstered the market growing 75.5% to reach 34.7 million units, more than four times the size of the PDA market. PDA shipments increased by 5.7% totaling 7.4 million units. more

European Converged Device Market Shows Poor Opening Quarter
According to the latest market data from IDC, the Western European mobile device market (including standalone handhelds and converged devices) grew by 25% year on year in the opening quarter of 2006, as total shipments reached 3.2 million units. Significantly, the handheld market failed to recover from the dramatic decline in 4Q05, as shipments of just 549,000 units represented further negative growth of -21% year on year, with only Fujitsu Siemens registering positive growth. Additionally, disappointing growth of 43% and shipments of 2.67 million units for converged devices meant market performance fell below expectations. more

Smartphone Forecast: Shipments to More Than Double in 2006
Smartphones' premium prices and "supersized" form factors have historically combined with a limited demand for advanced data services to restrict them to "niche market" status. But 2006 will bring a growth spurt in the smartphone market that will see worldwide shipments more than double. The 123 million units that ABI Research forecasts will be shipped this year will give smartphones nearly a 15% share of the mobile phone market, according to its recent study. more
