Hannu Verkasalo, who has the public examination of his doctoral dissertation at Helsinki University of Technology on April 17th, says that "the usage of new smartphone applications, including the mobile Internet, games, multimedia and map applications, has been increasing among smartphone users and reaches already 40% of total face time". A new report from Portio Research focused on mobile messaging has suggested that SMS will continue to be the cash cow of mobile data revenues for some time to come. Traffic volumes and revenues continue to confound predictions and are expected to keep growing throughout the global economic downturn. Indeed the whole mobile messaging industry worth US$130 billion in 2008 is predicted to be worth US$224 billion by 2013, 60 percent of non-voice service revenues. more

Mobile Email Supplier Synchronica buys AxisMobile
Mobile e-mail vendor, Synchronica is acquiring consumer mobile email specialist AxisMobile for US$4.9 million in an all shares transaction. Synchronica also stated that it has raised additional funds of US$10million, from new and existing institutional investors, which brings the total funding secured in 2008 to US$18 million. The additional funds will be used to accelerate product integration and fuel the growth of the combined business in emerging markets such as China, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Latin America. more
