No sign of wireless downturn in North America yet
Independent Analyst Comment - Steven Hartley, Senior Analyst at Ovum
North America was the first region to be affected by the current economic
crisis and, to date, has been the hardest hit. Although the full effects of the
downturn are yet to be felt, the wireless operators' results in the third
quarter reflect how mobile services have become indispensable and two-year
contracts are protecting the sector in the region. Mobile telecom remains on
track to grow in the region in 2009.

Motricity Sues Former President After He Left for Sprint Nextel
Sprint Nextel's president of network operations and wholesale, Steven Elfman is being sued by his former employer - Motricity after the firm alleged that he mislead them into making a purchase. Elfman had headed up the mobile services business unit at InfoSpace which was brought by Motricity last year - and the firm claims that it only have entered into the transaction based in part on an agreement that Steven Elfman would stay with the firm for at least two years after the sale completed. Elfman left the firm in March to join Sprint Nextel. more

US Mobile Market Remains Slow as Economic Concerns Mount
During Q2 08, the US mobile market saw a marginal recovery from the depressed levels of Q1, with around 4m net additions, taking the total to 261.5m, up from 243.3m one year ago. Overall penetration has now reached 86.1%, against 80.8% in June 07. more

US Data Market Grew 40% in Q2 '08
The US wireless data market grew 40% in Q208 compared to Q207 to reach $8.2B in data revenues according to a report from Chetan Sharma Consulting. The total for 2008 stands at US$15.7 billion for the first six months, 38% higher than the total for the same time period in 2007. The USA again exceeded Japan in mobile data service revenues for the quarter and the market is on track to reach US$34 billion in data revenues for 2008. more

Smart Mobile Device Shipments Jump 53% to 118 Million in 2007
The latest market data from analyst firm Canalys shows how much the converged device market (all smart phones and wireless handhelds) has grown over the past year. These, typically high-end, devices represented around 10% of the global mobile phone market by units in 2007, with annual growth of 60% making them one of the fastest growing segments of the technology industry. Year-on-year growth climbed every quarter throughout 2007, to reach a peak of 72% in Q4. more
