Africa, Middle East to Lead Mobile Broadband Subscriber Growth by 2012

Africa and the Middle East will lead the world in terms of the percentage of mobile broadband subscriptions through 2012, according to a new report from Pyramid Research. Although Africa and the Middle East generated 10 percent of global mobile revenue in 2008, the region contributed only 3 percent of global mobile data revenue, notes Dearbhla McHenry, analyst at Pyramid Research and author of the report. However, the region will double its share of global mobile data revenue by 2014 due to its growing popularity of mobile broadband in the region, in rich and poor markets alike.  more

Intelligent Congestion Management Can Reduce Mobile Broadband Costs

Camiant, which offers mobile data policy control software has commissioned a report which finds that active management of mobile broadband congestion can result in cost savings of upwards of 20% for network operators. The report, written by Omnitele, concludes that controlling the bandwidth consumption of certain users solely during peak hours allows maximum usage of the network by all subscribers when capacity is available while constraining the need for additional network capacity.  more

Hong Kong Mobile Data Users Transfer Average 44Mbytes Per Month

Hong Kong's telecoms regulator, OFTA has published for the first time the statistics of local mobile data usage, which sees a surge to 147 Terabytes (i.e. 147,000 Gigabytes) as of January 2009, or an average amount of 44 Mbytes per 2.5G/3G mobile user for that particular month.  more

Singapore Network Offers PrePay Mobile Data for Visitors

Singapore's MobileOne (M1) has launched a PrePay mobile data tariff which aimed directly at travelers to the country. The network operator said that the new service will provide a cheaper alternative to the broadband connection services provided at most hotels. The service will also benefit the occasional broadband users who do not wish to be tied to service contracts.  more

StarHub Launches HSPA+ Upgrade: Offers Peak 21Mbps Download Speeds

Singapore's StarHub, in partnership with Huawei has announced the launch of StarHub's HSPA+ upgrade - offering peak mobile data downloads of up to 21Mbps. When Australian operator, Telstra launched its HSPA+ upgrade, it said that customers could expect the average download speed to be around 8Mbps.  more

Austria Gets Europe's First HSPA+ Mobile Data Network

Telekom Austria's mobile subsidiary, mobilkom austria, has become the first operator in Europe to launch HSPA+ services - offering a potential mobile data download speed of 21 Mbps. In a first step, HSPA+ will be rolled-out in Vienna's 10th district, with further hotspots following throughout the country by the second quarter of 2009.  more

Femtocells Deliver 5-Times Speed of Macro Network in Operator Trials

Femtocell developer, Airvana has published results of performance tests of the company's HubBub CDMA femtocell which it says demonstrated dramatic improvements for indoor 3G coverage and performance when compared with using the existing macro-cellular network alone. Based on the results of side-by-side testing, a typical HubBub user can expect to achieve broadband data rates throughout their house of approximately five times that of the existing wireless macro network.  more
