Mobile application sales to hit $16 billion per year by 2013

­The number of smartphones sold each year will increase from around 165.2 million in 2009 to 422.96 million in 2013, with the total number of smartphone users approaching 1.6 billion, according to Wireless Expertise, an UK-based wireless market research and consulting firm. Its latest report says that smartphone penetration will reach approximately 28-30% of the total mobile market by 2013.  more

DoCoMo Launches Takeover of German Mobile Content Distributor

­Japan's DoCoMo has announced an agreed takeover of Germany based mobile content distributor, net mobile AG. The company is offering , EUR 6.35 per share for all outstanding shares of net mobile. The offer price represents a 53.9 percent premium over the three-month average weighted share price prior to this announcement and a 34.2 percent premium over the closing price on September 10, 2009.  more

Smartphone Downloads from All App Stores to Reach 6.67 Billion in 2014

Smartphone penetration in the U.S. mobile markets is increasing rapidly. For some time, mobile operators have been offering a branded 'catalog' of mobile content and services that could be purchased from the handset itself. However, all that is changing for smartphones, in which newer types of targeted app stores are being introduced to enable the device owner to purchase content from outside the operator environment. The availability of a large number of inexpensive or free mobile applications that leverage the next-generation technical capabilities of the target device will help drive adoption. However, in the end, service differentiation and generating suitable return on investment from the app store business could be challenging.  more
