Third of Brits have Tried Mobile Commerce - Didn't Like It

­A consumer study of mobile commerce habits from Art Technology Group (ATG) reveals that 38% of UK consumers have tried to shop online from their mobiles, but 28% of those who have tried it find it a difficult way to shop. The results reveal that while consumer interest is rising, mobile operators and handset operators need to work together to address concerns for m-commerce adoption to rise.  more

Mobile Operators Turn to Direct Top-up to Counter Declining Prepaid ARPU

The implementation of a direct operator top-up strategy can bring double digit revenue gains and reduced costs, claims a study commissioned by electronic payments vendor, Vesta Corp. Given the size of the prepaid market in Western Europe, this can equate to hundreds of millions of Euros annually, adds the report. Direct operator top-up channels include all operator-managed top-up channels that rely on electronic transactions outside a retail environment, such as the operator's website, IVR and handset applications.  more

Malaysia's Celcom Orders USSD Based Mobile Money Service

Malaysian mobile network operator, Celcom has ordered a mobile money service based on USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) from Sybase 365. USSD is an 'instant messaging type' phone service with quick response times. USSD is similar to SMS, but unlike SMS, USSD transactions occur only during the session and have no store-and-forward capability.  more

New Mobile Payment Service Launched in Canada

Canadian mobile payment vendor, EnStream has launched a money transfer service, Zoompass that gives customers a fast and convenient way to send and receive money securely using their mobile phone. The iPhone effect: will it work its magic on mobile advertising?

It is not just the iPhone platform that is attractive to advertisers

The iPhone and devices that are following in its wake provide the best platform yet for enabling mobile advertising because they are optimised for rich media applications like video and also provide a genuinely good mobile browsing experience. This means the potential for better, more creative mobile advertising campaigns and of course a more engaging user experience. Another big plus for advertising on the iPhone is the kind of people that own them. Comscore recently released data about iPhone application users that suggests they are a particularly attractive demographic for advertisers, with higher than average incomes and higher than average engagement with online media. More than half (54%) of app users are in households with incomes greater than $75,000 per year. Engagement with online retail scored particularly highly, which suggests they could be open to mobile commerce that by its nature has a strong affinity with mobile advertising.  more

Non-NFC Mobile Commerce Transactions to Total $1.6 Billion in 2009

Contraction in Migrant Workers Impacts Mobile Money Transfer Market by 50%

A new study by Juniper Research indicates that the mobile money transfer market will be particularly vulnerable to the effects of the global recession. The rapidly changing economic downturn is forecast to have an immediate impact on the gross value of mobile money transfers, with the market in the worst case scenario reaching $73bn by 2011. This is some 50% less than previously forecast, although strong growth overall is still expected in the long term.  more
