CTIA Reports US Mobile Data Revenues Jumped 39% in 2008

The US trade body, the CTIA has published the findings of its semi-annual industry survey, which includes numerous positive metrics on the industry's continued growth and popularity. In particular, wireless revenues showed impressive year-to year gains, as wireless data service revenues for the year 2008 rose to more than $32 billion. This represents a 39% increase over 2007, when data revenues totaled $23.2 billion. Wireless data revenues for 2008 amounted to nearly 22% of all wireless service revenues, and represent what consumers spend on non-voice services.  more

Mobile phone usage relatively safe from spending cutbacks

When asked about what measures they would take if they had to reduce their personal expenditure in 2009, very few consumers said they would stop using their mobile phone or switch to a cheaper mobile service, but consumer electronics purchases will be hit much more severely, according to a survey of 2,400 consumers across France, Germany and the UK conducted by Canalys in March.  more

SMS to Drive Uptake of Mobile Data in Africa and the Middle East

Basic SMS text messaging will be a key revenue driver for mobile network operators in Africa and the Middle East over the next five years, helping to offset continuing declines in ARPU for mobile voice services in the regions, according to a new report from Pyramid Research.  more

Asia-Pacific leads high-speed Internet connectivity, but wide divide prevails

The International Telecoms Union (ITU) has reported that while some Asia-Pacific economies are world leaders in information and communication technologies (ICT) where broadband access is ultra-high speed, affordable and close to ubiquitous, in most of the region's poorer countries Internet access remains limited and predominantly low-speed. A new report finds evidence that ICTs and broadband uptake foster growth and development, but the question remains as to the optimal speed that should be targeted in view of limited resources.  more
