84% of UK consumers have experienced QoS issues with Mobile Broadband Services
New consumer research published by YouGov and Acision again reinforces the Quality of Service (QoS) challenges operators are facing with their mobile broadband services today. The research, which questioned UK consumers about their mobile broadband experience found that, despite the rising popularity of mobile broadband, 84% had experienced Quality of Service issues. Slow speeds are amongst the most encountered problem (67%), poor network coverage (49%), inability to get connected (45%) and connection loss (40%). more

Broadband remains a 'sticky' service

One possible scenario for the telecoms industry during the current economic
slowdown is that fixed-to-mobile substitution (FMS) will be accelerated as
consumers reduce their communications bill by cutting their fixed line in favour
of mobile services. With mobile broadband deals now more readily available and
affordable, there is a potential ¢â‚¬Ëœdouble whammy' to this in that fixed line
operators could not only lose further fixed voice revenues but valuable
broadband revenues as well. Ovum therefore commissioned a survey of over 8,000
consumers to find out their plans.

Vodafone Portugal has announced an option which will allow subscribers to use their mobile phone as a mobile modem for connection to a computer. While it is technically possible to use a phone as a modem, most data plans do not permit it - or attract news headline grabbing costs. more

Qualcomm Cancels UMB Development - Focuses on LTE
Qualcomm has decided to cancel development of Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) products as the company seeks to cut costs in the face of a slow down in demand for mobile phones. The company will now focus on developing Long Term Evolution (LTE) based platforms - which has been backed by the majority of WCDMA based mobile operators as their network upgrade path. more

iPass Mobile Broadband Network Expands to Scandinavia
Wi-Fi roaming provider, iPass announced a partnership agreement with 3 Scandinavia, part of the Hutchison Whampoa 3 Group of companies, which will provide iPass customers with access to its 3G network in Sweden - including mobile data in-bundle roaming into Denmark. Under the terms of the agreement, iPass will integrate 3's HSDPA and HSUPA network into its iPass Mobile Office service, which unifies remote and mobile connectivity across more than 160 countries. more

Fitch Affirms Vodafone Debt at 'A-'; Outlook Stable
Fitch Ratings affirmed Vodafone Group's Long-term Issuer Default (IDR) and senior unsecured ratings at 'A-' (A minus) and Short-term IDR at 'F2'. The Outlook remains Stable. Fitch says that the ratings reflect Vodafone's unrivalled scale as one of the world's largest mobile operators (by revenue), with a solid market position across Europe and a diversified portfolio of non-European assets. more
