Motorola Wins Chinese 3G Contract

Motorola says that it has won a W-CDMA contract with China Unicom for an undisclosed amount. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with W-CDMA radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3G interoperability functions that will enable the integration of China Unicom's GSM and W-CDMA networks.  more

Motorola to Expand Taiwanese WiMAX Network

Taiwan's Far EasTone Telecom (FET) has awarded Motorola additional contracts to expand its WiMAX network in Taichung, Taiwan. Intelligent Congestion Management Can Reduce Mobile Broadband Costs

Camiant, which offers mobile data policy control software has commissioned a report which finds that active management of mobile broadband congestion can result in cost savings of upwards of 20% for network operators. The report, written by Omnitele, concludes that controlling the bandwidth consumption of certain users solely during peak hours allows maximum usage of the network by all subscribers when capacity is available while constraining the need for additional network capacity.  more

The study found, across a wide variety of scenarios considering different regions of the world, the business case for femtocells is strong---often doubling the customer lifetime value---and does not depend on any one critical factor or assumption in order to generate a favorable outcome. CTIA Reports US Mobile Data Revenues Jumped 39% in 2008

The US trade body, the CTIA has published the findings of its semi-annual industry survey, which includes numerous positive metrics on the industry's continued growth and popularity. In particular, wireless revenues showed impressive year-to year gains, as wireless data service revenues for the year 2008 rose to more than $32 billion. This represents a 39% increase over 2007, when data revenues totaled $23.2 billion. Wireless data revenues for 2008 amounted to nearly 22% of all wireless service revenues, and represent what consumers spend on non-voice services.  more

Mobile phone usage relatively safe from spending cutbacks

When asked about what measures they would take if they had to reduce their personal expenditure in 2009, very few consumers said they would stop using their mobile phone or switch to a cheaper mobile service, but consumer electronics purchases will be hit much more severely, according to a survey of 2,400 consumers across France, Germany and the UK conducted by Canalys in March.  more
