Mobile phone usage relatively safe from spending cutbacks

When asked about what measures they would take if they had to reduce their personal expenditure in 2009, very few consumers said they would stop using their mobile phone or switch to a cheaper mobile service, but consumer electronics purchases will be hit much more severely, according to a survey of 2,400 consumers across France, Germany and the UK conducted by Canalys in March.  more

Airport Communter Buses to Get Free Wi-Fi Service

A fleet of buses running between Luton Airport and London, UK have been fitted out with free Wi-Fi services for passengers. The fleet of buses, operated by Arriva has been equipped with Icomera's Moovbox M Series mobile broadband gateway that provides Wi-Fi connectivity on the move with actual download speeds in excess of two megabits per second. The Green Line vehicles also leverage the Moovbox for GPS-based location, enabling Arriva staff to monitor and track the fleet's vehicles in real-time.  more

Growing demand for location-based services in advanced mobile markets

Location-based services (LBS) in Asia-Pacific are expected to see strong growth in the next five years, with wider adoption in the more advanced and saturated mobile and mobile data markets. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan finds that the mobile LBS market covering 13 Asia-Pac countries earned revenues of US$383.6 million in 2007 and expects this to reach US$2.8 billion by end-2013, at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 39.3 percent (2007-2013).  more

New York Taxis Using Sprint CDMA Network for Credit Card Transactions

US operator, Sprint Nextel has fitted out some 6,600 taxis in New York City with a real-time integrated payment and information system, powered by its Mobile Broadband network and Sprint Data Link to ensure secure credit card transactions. The rollout was developed with VeriFone's U.S.-based taxi business, VeriFone Transportation Systems (VTS).  more
