Attempts to sell mobile broadband as an alternative to fixed broadband are likely to fail in European and US markets because there is a strong, and correct, perception among consumers that mobile broadband is slower, less reliable and more expensive than fixed broadband. Where consumers have a choice between fixed and mobile broadband, mobile broadband should not be sold as the primary means of access, but as a complement. This is based on the findings of the Connected Consumer survey 2, a study of the telecoms and media activities of 6000 consumers across Europe and the USA published by Analysys Mason. more

Increased Use of Wireless Networks Demands More Stringent Security Measures
The increase in mobile broadband services and the advent of new wireless technologies will increase the number of mobile workers who carry their business data on laptops and smart phones. They often connect to the Internet through home and public wireless local area networks (WLANs), easily exposing their data to hackers. This spike in the number of WLANs and the advent of 802.11n specifications have hastened the development of wireless security technologies, since the ubiquity of WLAN has made wireless networks a soft target for a variety of attacks. more

GSMA Urges Latin American Regulators to Relax radio Spectrum Limits
Tight spectrum caps in some Latin American countries are artificially curbing uptake and usage of broadband in the region, according to a study by consultancy Arthur D Little (ADL) for the GSMA, the global trade group for the mobile industry. The study found that rigid restrictions on the amount of spectrum available to mobile operators are undermining their ability to provide mobile broadband services that would enable millions of people to access the Internet, email and other online services via computers and handsets at high speeds in areas lacking DSL or cable broadband connections. more
