Ericsson Announces Plans to Cut 5,000 Jobs
Ericsson has reported that its net income for the fourth quarter fell by 31% due to restructuring costs and lower profit margins - and announced plans for a further 5,000 job cuts. Net income in the three months to Dec. 31 was SEK3.89 billion (US$460.8 million), down from SEK5.64 billion (US$671 million) in the year-earlier period. Sales in the quarter increased by 23% year-over-year and by 11% for the full year. more

Ericsson Reports Stronger than Expected 3rd Quarter Results
Ericsson has reported stronger than anticipated third quarter earnings after posting an operating profit of SEK5.7 billion (US$772.5 million) excluding restructuring charges. Financial analysts polled by the Reuters news agency had expected a 3rd quarter earnings of around SEK4 billion (US$540 million). Sales climbed by 13% to SEK49.2 billion (US$6.64 billion) with an operating margin 11.5% - which was down on the 12.9% from a year ago - but still higher than expected considering the economic situation. more

Business Use of Wi-Fi Hotspots Increases by 46%
iPass has published the latest edition of its Mobile Broadband Index, which tracks the wireless use patterns of mobile workers around the world. The report shows worldwide business use of iPass Wi-Fi hotspots increased by 46% from the first half of 2007 to the first half of 2008 and that users of 2.5G and 3G mobile broadband technologies in the US increased their data traffic in the second quarter of the year by 59% between 2007 and 2008. more

Ericsson Q2 Profits Plunge 70%
Ericsson has reported that its second-quarter profit fell 70 percent because of costs to cut jobs and falling sales of phones made by its Sony Ericsson joint venture. Net income fell to SEK1.9 billion (US$320 million) from SEK6.4 billion (US$1.07 billion) a year ago. Revenue rose 2 percent to SEK48.5 billion (US$8.1 billion) in the quarter. more
