T-Mobile tops mobile broadband survey two quarters in a row

T-Mobile UK says that its Mobile Broadband service has been rated highest in more categories than any other mobile network operator in an independent YouGov survey of 2,083 mobile broadband users. This latest survey also reveals T-Mobile's Mobile Broadband network coverage is most highly rated by consumers, a reflection of the investment T-Mobile has made in this area. The poll also found T-Mobile was best in a range of customer-centric categories, including getting connected, ease of use and installation, billing and was ranked joint first for customer services.  more

New Boss Named for T-Mobile UK

Richard Moat has been appointed the new Managing Director of T-Mobile UK and will be joining the company in June. The 54-year old Briton, who has been the Chief Executive Officer of Orange Romania, will succeed Jim Hyde, who left the company for personal reasons at the end of March.  more

Etisalat Says Sold 10,000 BlackBerry Phones in One Month

UAE based operator, Etisalat says that it has seen an enthusiastic response from its customers with more than 10,000 customers signing up for the BlackBerry service in the month of April. That month also saw the launch of the BlackBerry Storm 9500 smartphone in the UAE.  more

2009 Will Be Year of the Mini-Notebook in Asia Pacific

Shipments of mini-notebooks in Asia Pacific will reach four million units in 2009, growing by a robust 82 per cent over 2008, according to Gartner. Growth will stabilise at 20 per cent or more in 2010 and 2011, when mini-notebooks will account for more than 14 per cent of all mobile PCs shipped.  more

Africa, Middle East to Lead Mobile Broadband Subscriber Growth by 2012

Africa and the Middle East will lead the world in terms of the percentage of mobile broadband subscriptions through 2012, according to a new report from Pyramid Research. Although Africa and the Middle East generated 10 percent of global mobile revenue in 2008, the region contributed only 3 percent of global mobile data revenue, notes Dearbhla McHenry, analyst at Pyramid Research and author of the report. However, the region will double its share of global mobile data revenue by 2014 due to its growing popularity of mobile broadband in the region, in rich and poor markets alike.  more

Virgin Trains to offer on-board Wi-Fi Service

T-Mobile UK and Virgin Trains today announced the launch of Wi-Fi internet services for passengers on Pendolino Virgin trains on the West Coast Main Line. The Wi-Fi HotSpot service will provide a wireless broadband connection throughout the entire journey, including all tunnel sections, at high speeds. The HotSpot service has been rolled out by T-Mobile's solution partner, Nomad Digital.  more

Mongolia Gets HSPA Network Upgrade

Mongolian operator MobiCom has launched a HSPA upgrade, with the network supplied by Ericsson. The launch enables MobiCom to introduce mobile broadband services to its subscribers across Mongolia, starting in the capital Ulaanbaatar where about 40 percent of the country's 3 million inhabitants live.  more

Motorola Wins Chinese 3G Contract

Motorola says that it has won a W-CDMA contract with China Unicom for an undisclosed amount. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with W-CDMA radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3G interoperability functions that will enable the integration of China Unicom's GSM and W-CDMA networks.  more
