India is to delay the implementation of Mobile Number Portability (mnp) until the end of the year following delays at the networks and the regulator. Mobile Number Portability More Attractive to India's Postpaid Users
The introduction of Mobile Number Portability is considered good news for consumers, but presents a looming threat for mobile operators since it presents consumers with the choice of retaining their current mobile phone numbers even if they change their operator. And according to a recently conducted Mobile Consumer Insights study conducted by The Nielsen Company to gauge consumer attitudes and behavior towards mobile operators in India, it seems that close to one in five (18%) Indian mobile phone subscribers would change their mobile operator if Mobile Number Portability is introduced into the market. more

Thai Regulator Publishes Mobile Number Portability Plans
Thailand's National Telecommunications Commission has published the final details of its plans for mobile number portability. The new rules will come into effect next month, although the operators will actually have up to three months to comply with the regulations. more

Vodafone Turkey Lost 1.24 Million Subscribers in Q1 2009
Turkey followed Italy and the UK in suffering a quarterly loss to its customer base. The 1.44m decline was the largest ever seen, as well as being the first for seven years. At the end of Q1 09, the total customer base stood at 64.48m, just 3.1% above the Q1 08 total. This was the lowest growth rate ever recorded in the Turkish market and 12.3pp below the year-earlier rate. Penetration fell back below 90% during the quarter, finishing on 89.0%. However, there is every chance that a resurgence in growth will take penetration over 100% once 3G is launched, with reports suggesting that the first W-CDMA networks will be operational very soon. more

Indian Regulator Publishes Draft MNP Proposals
India's telecoms regulator, the TRAI has published its draft regulations for the forthcoming Mobile Number Portability in the country. The Authority had issued a consultation paper on mnp in July 2005 and submitted its recommendations to Department of Telecom (DoT) in March 2006. In these recommendations, the Authority had recommended implementation of mnp in the whole country in a phased manner, starting from Metros and A category service areas followed by B and C category service areas. more

Uganda Wont See Number Portability Until at Least Next Year

Ecuador Awards Mobile Number Portability Contract
Ecuador's telecoms regulator, Senatel has awarded a contract to manage mobile number portability between the country's three mobile network operators. The contract has been awarded to Systor Telconet JR Electric Supply, a joint venture between Norway's Systor Tronheim and local firms, Telconet and JR Electric Supply. more
