CTIA Reports US Mobile Data Revenues Jumped 39% in 2008

The US trade body, the CTIA has published the findings of its semi-annual industry survey, which includes numerous positive metrics on the industry's continued growth and popularity. In particular, wireless revenues showed impressive year-to year gains, as wireless data service revenues for the year 2008 rose to more than $32 billion. This represents a 39% increase over 2007, when data revenues totaled $23.2 billion. Wireless data revenues for 2008 amounted to nearly 22% of all wireless service revenues, and represent what consumers spend on non-voice services.  more

Fun Text Goes Live On 3 UK Handsets

Graphical messaging firm, Fun Text says that it has secured a deal with Hutchison 3G UK (3) for its handset-based messaging application to be installed on a range of 3's mobile phones. Under the deal, 3UK customers will be able to access Fun Text's rich media messaging capabilities direct from the messaging menu of their phone, alongside traditional alternatives such as SMS and mms.  more

SMS traffic surges 20% to 8.4bn messages in 2006

The volume of short message service (SMS) traffic in Brazil surged 20% to 8.4bn messages in 2006 compared to 7.0bn in 2005, newspaper Gazeta Mercantil reported, citing estimates from mobile messaging solution supplier Okto. more

SMSs in Canada Top 4 Billion in 2006

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association says that mobile phone customers sent more than 4.3 billion person-to-person text messages in 2006, almost triple the 1.5 billion messages sent in 2005. Text message volumes peaked in December 2006 at more than 560 million in that month alone, which represents more than 18 million per day. more
