Israeli Operators Submit Bids for Motorola Subsidiary

Two of Israel's mobile network operators have submitted non-binding offers to buy rival network, MIRS, which is currently owned by Motorola. Both Cellcom and Partner, which itself is being put up for sale, have submitted bids. Neither company have detailed how much they are offering for the mobile network operator, although the company has been previously valued at around US$300 million.  more

Motorola Rumoured to be Working on iDEN Based Android Phone

Motorola is reported to be preparing to launch an iDEN based Android smartphone early next year. Due to the nature of the iDEN networks though, the phone is expected to only run mobile internet services when connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot.  more

Motorola Looking to Sell Israeli Mobile Network Subsidiary

It is being reported that Shamrock Holdings, the investment arm of Walt Disney Co. is looking to buy a stake in Israeli mobile network operator, MIRS Communications. The Israeli business newspaper, Globes reported that Shamrock Holdings is in preliminary talks with Motorola, who own MIRS.  more

Israel Consults on Possible 3G Spectrum Auction

Israel's Ministry of Communications is to hold a public consultation to decide how to allocate a batch of unused 3G radio spectrum. The move has been prompted by a request from MIRS Communications after it was earlier blocked from bidding for WiMAX licenses.  more

Israel Authorises Test of WiMAX Networks

Israel's Ministry of Communications has granted approval to MIRS to launch two trial WiMAX networks in Tel Aviv and Ashkelon. The approval is given in order to enable a technical experiment and an integration experiment, designed to examine and to lay out the technical format for the provision of various broadband, mobile telephony, and multimedia and data communication services, using WiMax technology.  more

MIRS gets a cellular license

As expected, Israel's Communications Ministry has awarded MIRS Communications a full cellular phone license. MIRS has had to charge users for incoming calls, but now that it has a cellular license, this charge can be passed to the call originator. MIRS will have to pay a fee for the license, although this will be lower than the US$400 million paid by partner for its GSM license due to the mature nature of the market." more

Fourth cellular license to be awarded next week in Israel

The Israeli Communication Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer has said that MIRS Communications is likely to be granted a cellular phone license next week. The company has a wireless services license and is already effectively offering a cellular phone service. However, as it does not have a formal cellular license, it cannot charge for incoming phone calls, as the three incumbent networks can. It also cannot allocate phone numbers to its "cell phone" users at the moment. Two of the existing networks, Cellcom and Orange have threatened to sue if MIRS is awarded he license at no cost, which is the preference of the Communications Ministry. " more
