Israeli Operators Submit Bids for Motorola Subsidiary
Two of Israel's mobile network operators have submitted non-binding offers to buy rival network, mirs, which is currently owned by Motorola. Both Cellcom and Partner, which itself is being put up for sale, have submitted bids. Neither company have detailed how much they are offering for the mobile network operator, although the company has been previously valued at around US$300 million. more

Israel Authorises Test of WiMAX Networks
Israel's Ministry of Communications has granted approval to mirs to launch two trial WiMAX networks in Tel Aviv and Ashkelon. Israeli Operator Orders Fixed/Mobile Platform
Israel's iDEN operator, mirs has ordered a core convergence switching solution from Tekelec. The solution enables mirs' transition to the Internet protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS) architecture and enables next-generation capabilities, including fixed mobile convergence (FMC) and hosted session initiation protocol (SIP) services. Tekelec's IMS architecture drives switching for both mirs' entire mobile device line and SIP-based clients, and it supports the execution of common network applications. more

Three bid for Israel's 3G licenses
Three of Israel's four cellular networks have submitted applications for the country's impending 2G and 3G spectrum auction. mirs, which was recently awarded a cellular license has written to the Communications Ministry asking for a different payment schedule. mirs is asking for no up front payment, but an annual royalty based on the company turnover. "We think the payment should be a function of success, especially given the uncertainty of the 3G future," said mirs General Manager Shimon Tal. mirs has proposed the royalty format before, but the Communications Ministry blocked the proposal, and there is no indication that they will change their mind this time either. Pelephone, the CDMA network has decided to only bid for 3G spectrum, while Orange and Cellcom are bidding for spectrum in both the 2G and 3G bands. Orange is understood to be interested in additional capacity for its GPRS service, while Cellcom is migrating from TDMA to GSM and is already short of radio spectrum. more
