3G Americas Publishes Report on Smart Antennas
The trade association, 3G Americas has announced the publication of an educational report on the topic of smart antenna systems - also known as multiple-input multiple-output (mimo) technology. Smart antenna, or mimo, technology is commonly defined as, the use of two or more unique radio signals, in the same radio channel, where each signal carries different digital information, or two or more radio signals that use beam forming, receive combining and spatial multiplexing (SM). Relative to a traditional 1x1 antenna system, a 2x2 mimo system is expected to deliver significant cell throughput gain. more

DoCoMo Demos Mobile Downloads at 120Mbps using LTE Test Network
Fujitsu has announced that, in collaboration with NTT DoCoMo, they have conducted successful field testing for Long-term Evolution (LTE), using 4x4 mimo technology. The testing took place in the Special Ubiquitous Zone, an area of the northern Japanese city of Sapporo in Hokkaido, designated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in 2008 as a wireless communications testing area, and used prototypes of the wireless LTE base stations developed jointly by NTT DoCoMo, Fujitsu and Fujitsu Laboratories which, with the use of mimo technology, resulted in high-speed wireless transmissions in the range of 120 Mbps (using 10 MHz bandwidth) in Sapporo's urban environment. more

Ericsson to Demo 42Mbps Mobile Data Downloads
Ericsson says that it will perform the first-ever demonstration of the new HSPA multi-carrier technology for peak downlink data rates of 42Mbps at the Mobile World Congress next week. Multi-carrier technology is the next step in the evolution of HSPA and enables consumers to receive data simultaneously on two frequency channels. This doubles the user data rate in the coverage area of an HSPA network and on the cell edge, where consumers normally experience lower data rates. more
