MTN Rwanda Aims for 2 Million Subscribers by Year-End

­MTN Rwanda has set itself a target of reaching 2 million subscribers by the end of this year. The operator currently has around 1.4 million customers. The company also expects to be able to pick up half of the potential 6 million subscribers  that Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) is targeting by 2012.  more

Etisalat's Entry Could Weigh on Sri Lankan Telecom Operators' Credit Quality

­The entry of Etisalat into Sri Lanka can further delay any prospects for recovery in the Sri Lankan telecom operators' profitability, says Fitch Ratings. millicom International Cellular recently sold its fully-owned subsidiary in Sri Lanka, Tigo, to Etisalat in a competitive bidding process. Tigo is the third-largest mobile telephony operator in Sri Lanka with a market share of around 20% and a nationwide network footprint.  more

Etisalat Profits Up 9% After Exceptional Items

Etisalat has a net profit of AED 6.85 billion (US$1.87 billion) the first nine months of 2009, down on the AED 7.189 billion a year ago. That earlier figure was boosted though by an "exceptional income" after federal royalty profit on sale of shares in Mobily of AED 892 million (US$243 million). ­Excluding this exceptional item, the net profit shows an increase of AED 550 million (9%) for the nine months ended September 2009, higher than the same period in 2008.  more

Millicom Sells Sri Lankan Mobile Network to Etisalat

­Etisalat is buying the Sri Lankan mobile network, Tigo from its current owners, millicom International for approximately US$155 million in total cash proceeds.  more

Millicom Commits to Year-End Launch for Rwandan Network

­millicom has committed to launch its Tigo branded mobile phone network in Rwanda by the end of this year. The company was granted a license by the regulator last November. The company paid US$60 million for the 15 year license.  more

VimpelCom Buys Majority Stake in Laos Mobile Network

­millicom has signed an agreement for the sale of its 74.1% holding in its Laos operation, to Russia's VimpelCom for approximately US$65 million in total cash proceeds, payable on completion. The transaction values the entire Laos operation at an enterprise value of approximately $102 million, which represents 7.5x estimated 2009 EBITDA.  more

Ghana Commits Not to Award Any More Telecoms Licenses

­Ghana's government has decided not to issue any further telecoms licenses, to protect the integrity of the industry. Citing the Minister of Communications, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu the Ghana News Agency said that the country would remain with six operators for the foreseeable future.  more

Cambodian Network Looking for New Investors

Cambodia based CDMA operator, GT-Tell says that it is seeking an investor to fund its nationwide network expansion. Currently GT-Tell, operating under "Excell" brandname offers services both voice and data, including EVDO (3G) Mobile Broadband services in Phnom Penh and surrounding province.  more

Rwandan Government to Sell MTN Stake

The Rwandan government is planning to sell its 10% stake in local mobile network MTN, as part of a program of disposals. Two other companies, Bralirwa (the country's sole brewing company) and Sonarwa (the country's biggest insurance company) are also to be sold.  more
