First SMS Worm Detected to Infect Smartphones

Internet security vendor, F-Secure says that it has detected the first known SMS based worm for mobile phones. In its quarterly update on the security issues faced by computer and smartphone users, the company noted that the biggest malware story of 2009 so far has been the Conficker (aka Downadup) worm. It is a classic worm exploiting vulnerabilities in microsoft Windows, of the type that has not been seen in the past few years.  more

Malaysia's DiGi Offers Free Windows Live Service to Subscribers

Malaysian mobile network operator, DiGi and microsoft have started offering Windows Live Messenger (IM) to DiGi subscribers with a free two-month trial. Subscribers can access the service via mobile phones apart from desktop PCs, smartphones and PDAs.  more

Nokia Smartphone Sales Fall as RIM, Apple, Samsung Take Market Share

In the fourth quarter of 2008, worldwide sales of smartphones to end users reached 38.1 million units, an increase of 3.7 per cent on the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Global sales of smartphones for 2008 reached 139.3 million devices, up 13.9 per cent compared with 2007. more

Are Smartphones Immune to the Financial Crisis in Western Europe?

The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 31.9 million units, 36.1% higher than the 23.5 million units shipped in 2007.  more

Microsoft Stepping Up Windows Mobile Efforts

microsoft is reported to be planning to set up its own applications store, apping the version from Apple for its iPhone, as the firm tries to boost the popularity of its Windows Mobile operating system.
