Taiwanese Mobile Phone Industry Gains from Low-Cost Handsets

Fate of Taiwanese Mobile Phone Industry Linked to EMEA Nations

Taiwanese mobile phone industry shipment volume will grow by over 40% year-on-year to 18 million units in the second quarter of 2005, says Market Intelligence Center (mic), a Taipei-based ICT industry research house. Millicom ups subscriber numbers by 27%

Millicom International has said that in the first quarter of 2002 its worldwide operations in Asia, Latin America and Africa added 215,359 net new cellular subscribers or 144,383 subscribers on a proportional basis. At March 31, 2002, mic's worldwide cellular subscriber base increased by 27% to 3,581,910 cellular subscribers from 2,812,212 as at March 31, 2001, (excluding divested operations). Particularly significant annualized percentage increases were recorded in Cambodia, Pakistan, Honduras and Tanzania. At March 31, 2002, mic had 2,580,792 proportional cellular subscribers, an increase of 27% on the 2,033,020 proportional subscribers, reported at March 31, 2001. more

PC Card gets Korean 1xEV-DO approval

GTRAN Wireless has announced that the Korean Ministry of Information and Communication (mic) has issued it with regulatory approvals for the DotSurfer 1xEV-DO wireless data card. GTRAN Wireless says that it is the world's first company to receive mic approval for a 1xEV-DO product. Deploying in South Korea with SK Telecom, the DotSurfer 1xEV-DO (IS-856, HDR) wireless data card is a PCMCIA Type II modem that is capable of delivering speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps. The card is based on Qualcomm's MSM5500 chip set and is backwards compatible with 1XRTT and IS-95A/B systems. The card supports most major operating systems such as Windows 98/2000/ME/CE/NT/xP and Linux. more

Laos awards 2nd GSM license

Millicom International Cellular has been awarded a nationwide license to provide GSM wireless telephony in the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos). mic has been awarded frequencies for a GSM 900 and GSM 1800 network and will develop its services in a joint venture with the Committee for Investment and Co-operation, the Government investment licensing agency in Laos. Laos has a population of 5.43 million, with an estimated fixed line penetration of less than 0.8%. mic was awarded a license in principle to operate in Laos in June 2000. more

South Korea jumps onto the 4G bandwagon

The South Korean Ministry of Information and Communication (mic) has announced that it is to start development and research into 4G phone services. In a report to the National Assembly, the mic said that 4G services would support data speeds of up to 20Mbits. "3G technology has yet to be fully launched and its business perspectives are still unclear, but we decided to hurry up with the development of a 4G mobile standard in order to keep pace with other advanced countries,'' said mic spokesperson Ryu Phil-gye, probably referring to work on 4G services that has already begun in Japan and the UK. The mic did not say when it expects 4G services to be made available, but Japan is expecting commercial services in 2010. The mic has requested an initial just under US$1 million to fund studies into the 4G services." more
