US Wireless Growth Won't Be Stopped by Weak Economy

A Strategy Analytics report is predicting that US cellular subscriber growth will remain strong despite the economic situation, although growth levels will scale back slightly from 2008. US cellular service revenues will also continue to grow, albeit at a slower growth rate of 3.9%, down from 7.5% in 2008.  more

MetroPCS Added 520,000 Subscribers in Q4 '08

US mobile operator, metropcs has reported that in the fourth quarter of 2008, on a consolidated basis, the firm had gross additions of approximately 1.3 million subscribers, which represents an increase of 55% over the fourth quarter of 2007. Churn for the fourth quarter of 2008 was 5.1% compared to 4.8% in the fourth quarter of 2007.  more

Acquisitions Boosting US Companies' Growth Rates

The acquisitions of Dobson, Rural and Suncom have served to boost the number of net additions over the past twelve months at AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile respectively. AT&T already has Centennial in its sights for 2009, while VerizonÃ's acquisition of Alltel is set for closure imminently. As yet, T- Mobile has announced no riposte and in fact, it is difficult to see that there is a meaningful acquisition it could make, unless it wants to enter the murky world of CDMA which it has shown no inclination to do so far.  more

Four out of Seven Small US Networks Lost Customers in Q3

The Verizon-Alltel merger, which was recently approved by the FCC, will leave an even greater gap between the large and small US mobile operators; there will be no networks of between 7m and 30m customers. There are currently seven networks with fewer than 7m but more than 0.25m customers, although if AT&TÃ's plan to buy Centennial is successful, there will only be six remaining. At the end of Q3 08, these seven had 17.33m customers in total. Aggregated annual growth stood at 13.1%, compared to 15.9% for T-Mobile ,14.0% for AT&T, 11.2% for Verizon and -6.3% for Sprint.  more

MetroPCS 3rd Quater Profits Sink Despite Higher Revenues

US mobile network operator, metropcs has reported 3rd quarter revenues of US$687 million, an increase of 23% over the third quarter of 2007, and income from operations of approximately US$121 million, a decrease of 9% when compared to the third quarter of 2007.  more

MetroPCS Reports Increase of 39% in Year on Year Gross Additions

USA based mobile operator, metropcs has announced selected subscriber information for the quarter ended September 30, 2008. In the third quarter of 2008, on a consolidated basis, metropcs reported gross additions of approximately 935,000 subscribers, which represents an increase of 39% over the third quarter of 2007. Churn for the third quarter of 2008 decreased 0.4% when compared to the third quarter of 2007, and consistent with seasonal patterns, increased 0.3% to 4.8% when compared to the second quarter of 2008.  more

US Mobile Market Remains Slow as Economic Concerns Mount

During Q2 08, the US mobile market saw a marginal recovery from the depressed levels of Q1, with around 4m net additions, taking the total to 261.5m, up from 243.3m one year ago. Overall penetration has now reached 86.1%, against 80.8% in June 07.  more

US Small Operators Q2 - Customer Growth Falls but Mixed Results for ARPU

The US market has undergone some consolidation recently, but there remain seven operators with between 250k and 10m subscribers. The largest of these is US Cellular, which finished Q2 08 with 6.19m subscribers. Three others had more than 1m customers: metropcs (4.60m), Leap (3.31m) and Centennial (1.09m). Qwest, which recently started selling Verizon Wireless plans having terminated its contract with Sprint, had 0.81m at the end of the quarter. Finally, regional players Cincinnati Bell and Ntelos had 0.58m and 0.43m respectively.  more

PrePay Subscribers Prefer Flat-Rate Tariff Plans

Overall satisfaction among US prepaid wireless customers who subscribe to flat-rate plans with unlimited minutes is considerably higher than that of customers who subscribe to per-minute price plans, primarily due to cost advantages associated with flat-rate plans, according to a J.D. Power and Associates report.  more
