Singapore Firm Closes on Buying Ireland's Eircom
Debt-laden Irish telco, Eircom is reported to be sold to Singapore Technologies Telemedia (STT) later this week for around EUR130 million (US$185 million), reports local news media. The former state-owned company has had a series of owners since privatisation and is currently owned by an Australian registered holding company, Eircom Holdings (ERC), formerly known as Babcock & Brown Capital. more

Ireland's eircom - Meteoric rise coming to an end?
meteor is Ireland's third largest mobile operator. Its financial performance is, arguably, the sole bright spot in the Q1 report of eircom, its parent company. Heavily burdened by debt, eircom is losing fixed line traffic at an alarming rate. Over the last year, retail voice traffic has dropped by 10% and overall traffic by 13%. Almost every aspect of the fixed business has seen lower revenues and this has led through to lower EBITDA. more

Ireland Considers a Tax on Text Messages
The Irish government has confirmed that it is considering proposals to add a one euro cent tax on text messages. The Green Party originally proposed the tax last year claiming that it would raise around €1.4 billion for the government - although that figure was later revised sharply downwards to €146 million. more

BT Wi-Fi usage doubles in a year
Users of Wi-Fi hotspots operated by the UK's BT clocked up twice the number of minutes online between April and September 2008, than the same period last year. The half year figures, combining BT Openzone and BT FON are 100% up on the same period in 2007 and 57% up on the previous six months. more

UK Wi-Fi Provider Halves Monthly Subscription Rates
BT, the UKs dominant landline operator has cut public Wi-Fi rates by up to 50 percent as it launched a new price structure. More than 2,500 extra European hotspots are also being added, bringing the choice of places to connect to more than 50,000 overseas, and over 100,000 UK and Ireland locations. more

Eircom - Strong Mobile Growth, but Future is Uncertain
Despite the uncertainty surrounding its future, EircomÃ's 12-month financial results showed solid growth. Recent reports suggest that Australian investment bank Babcock Brown may terminate its management contract with the Babcock Brown Capital (BCM) fund which has direct ownership of Eircom. This may in turn trigger a sale of Eircom, although BCM has publicly stated that it has no intention of selling at present. However, group revenue was up 4.4% to €2,061m, while EBITDA rose by 7.9% to €698m. more

Ericsson Wins Irish HSPA Contract
Ericsson has signed an agreement with the Irish operator meteor Mobile Communications (meteor) as the sole supplier for a WCDMA/HSPA network including microwave transmission. Under the terms of the contract, Ericsson will supply a WCDMA/HSPA radio access network and a new microwave transmission network. more

Convergence Back on Telecoms M&A Radar as Values Surge
The value of Europe's telecoms mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market has increased by more than 316 percent over the past three years, according to a new report by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The report reveals total deal values of over €150 (US$201) billion for both 2005 and 2006 compared to €36 (US$48) billion in 2004. Some substantial deals have also returned such as the €6 billion plus acquisition of Wind in Italy and Amena in Spain, while 2006 saw the €25 billion acquisition of O2 by Telefonica. more
