Researchers at the Zernike Institute of Advanced Materials at the University of Groningen have developed a technology for a plastic ferro-electric diode which they believe will achieve a breakthrough in the development of ultra low-cost plastic memory material. iSuppli Raises 2006 Chip Estimate

After years of coming close to breaking into the top-10 global semiconductor rankings, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Hynix Semiconductor finally hit the big time in 2006, according to a preliminary ranking from iSuppli Corp. In the telecoms world, Qualcomm maintained its ranking while Broadcom managed to jump a couple of places.

Samsung Electronics has developed a 4Gb Flash memory device for mobile phones. The new OneNAND memory device operates on 1.8V, reducing power consumption to nearly half of the existing 3.3V level for other types of mobile memory. It also features a micro-compact size (11x13x1.4mm), considerably smaller than mobile memory of the same capacity. more

Fujitsu launches four stack chipset

Fujitsu Microelectronics America has introduced the industry's first four-stacked multi-chip package (MCP). The new MCP is equipped with a pair of 64 Megabit NOR dual-operation flash memory chips and 32 Megabit mobile Fast Cycle RAM (FCRAM) with an asynchronous SRAM interface and 8 Megabit SRAM. Fujitsu also announced a two-stacked MCP that incorporates 16/32/64 Megabit FCRAM, for mobile phone developers. more
