Russian Government May Buy Svyazinvest Stake

Russia's telecoms market faces a shake-up after further details emerged that could result in conglomerate, Sistema swapping a quarter of landline firm, Svyazinvest and half of CDMA operator, SkyLink for a 23% stake in Moscow landline operator, Moscow City Telephone Company (MGTS) along with the cancellation of debts of around US$826 million owed to Sberbank.  more

Russian Subscriber Growth - On the Brink of a Slowdown?

In the first quarter of 2009, the Russian market surpassed 190m customers and almost reached 135% penetration. The end-quarter total customer base of 190.65m was up by 22.81m year on year and the penetration rate of 134.8% was 16.6pp higher than the year-earlier figure. These are both strong gains, and they seem to indicate that growth is continuing unchecked. However, the quarterly figures suggest that Russia may be on the brink of a slowdown.  more

Svyazinvest Planning to Merge Russian Mobile Networks

Russia's Communications and Press Minister Igor Shchyogolev has confirmed that Svyazinvest is planning to merge its separate mobile network operator subsidiaries into a single company. The move is expected to make it easier for the state-controlled company to compete with the three main private networks who dominate the market.  more

Mobile Operators to See Strong Growth in Central Asia

Central Asia's emerging markets will continue flocking to mobile telecom services over the next five years, with subscriber bases growing about 13 percent per year and revenues growing by 8 percent annually through 2013, according to a new report from Pyramid Research.  more

Russia's Penetration Over 125% and No Sign of Stopping

The Russian market surpassed 125% penetration during Q3 to finish the quarter on 126.9%, but growth showed no sign of slowing: in fact, the annual growth figure of 14.5% was up 0.7pp compared to the prior twelve-month period. With 179.81m customers, Russia remained the fourth largest market in the world, around 87m behind the USA and 39m ahead of Brazil.  more

Syria Looking to Award 3rd Mobile License

The Syrian government is considering offering a 3rd mobile license, and is already in talks with Russian mobile operators to launch a network. The country currently has two networks, locally owned Syriatel and South African owned, MTN Syria.  more

Orange Confirms Submitting Bid for Armenian Mobile License

France Telecom's mobile division, Orange says that it has submitted a bid for the 3rd mobile phone license in Armenia - valued at EUR51 million (US$70 million). ArmeniaĆ's Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) announced the tender in July and said that there will be a reserve price of US$16 million for the license and the winner will be required to invest a minimum of US$320 million in the network rollout.  more

Russia & Central Asia Q2 08 - 3G ConnectionsTop Half a Million

The number of W-CDMA 3G connections in the Russia and Central Asia region surpassed half a million in the second quarter of 2008, as Russian market leader MTS joined the fray. Rival megafon was the first Russian operator to get next generation services underway at the end of October last year, with MTS entering the market at the end of May and Vimpelcom rolling out its first offerings just a couple of weeks ago.  more

MTS Confirms Interest in Taking Stake in Russian Mobile Phone Retailer

Russia's MTS has confirmed that it is interested in buying a minority stake in the country's largest mobile retailer, Euroset. The retailer was raided by police on two separate investigations last week - one related to claims of fraud and the other an alleged kidnapping by an employee several years ago.

Three Firms Shortlisted for Armenian Mobile License

Three companies, Orange, Tele2 and Ireland based Blackrock Communications have been shortlisted for Armenia's 3rd mobile operator license. A statement from the Transportation and Communication Ministry said that although 17 companies applied for the tender documents, only six companies submitted a bid, Orange, CEO Blackrock Communications, V-Tel, Tele2, Auroratel and PJ Engineering.  more
