Meditel Looking to Float 25% by Year-End

Four Bidding for Moroccan 3G Licenses

Morocco's telecoms regulator, Agence Nationale de Reglementation des Telecommunications (ANRT) has announced that four companies are bidding for the three available 3G licenses the country is planning to offer. The four bidders are Vivendi's Maroc Telecom - local operator, Connect - a joint venture between Telefonica and Portugal Telecom, meditel - and finally, Nejma Telecom Maroc, a subsidiary of Kuwait's Wataniya. more

Moroccan network expects 50% market share

The Moroccan based GSM network, meditel said it expects to capture half the country's mobile phone market by 2003. "At this stage, meditel has reached 375,000 subscribers, of which 90 percent are pre-paid card subscriptions" meditel's general director Julian Barrenchea told a news conference on Monday. meditel, a consortium led by Spain's Telefonica and Morocco's blue-chip BMCE Bank, went into commercial operation in April this year." more
