ZTE Wins Indian GSM Network Contract
China's ZTE has won a US$400 million GSM expansion contract from India's Aircel - a subsidiary of Malaysia's maxis. Aircel is currently operating in 10 telecom circles (Assam, Bihar, Chennai, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Calcutta, North East, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal) and with licences secured for the remaining 13 of the 23 telecom circles. more

Maxis Planning US$4 Billion Investment in Indian Subsidiary
Malaysia's maxis Communications plans to invest upwards of US$5 billion over the next four years in its Indian subsidiary, Aircel to expand the network and boost capacity. Aircel has spent some US$2 billion since the company was set up - with over $500 million last year. more

AT&T Eyeing Up Indian Mobile Operator Acquisition
AT&T is said to be considering a joint venture with India's Aircel - by purchasing the stake in the company held by Malaysia's maxis. Aircel was valued at nearly US$1.5 billion in January 2006 when investor Sivasankaran had offloaded his entire stake to maxis. At the time, the company had around 2.6 million subscribers, although this has now risen to around 6.2 million. The rapid growth in India's mobile market will push that valuation up significantly. more
