Enabling cellphones on Boston's underground railway
The massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has granted a license to InSite Wireless for the right to install, operate, and maintain an underground neutral wireless communication network within the MBTA's subway system. Under the terms of the 15-year license, the MBTA is guaranteed minimum fees totaling nearly US$4 million. Five firms had competed for the contract. more

USA expands number portability
Phase 2 of the USA's deployment of mobile number portability went live yesterday, bringing the service to the entire country. Until now, the service was limited to the "top100" markets in the USA. The initial phase of LNP went into effect in November 2003 in the top 100 markets across the country, which in New England, included Boston, Hartford (CT), Providence (RI) and Springfield (MA). more

Cell phones could be powered by sugar cubes
Researchers have found a way of converting sugars into electricity with an efficiency that makes the technique suitable for use in cell phones. Professor Derek Lovley and postdoctoral researcher Swades Chaudhuri, both based at the University of massachusetts Amherst, have discovered a microorganism that is capable of stable, long-term electricity production by oxidizing carbohydrates. The organism, Rhodoferax ferrireducens, transfers electrons directly onto an electrode as it metabolizes sugar into electricity, producing carbon dioxide as a byproduct. more

Cable & Wireless says that it has appointed Barbara Poggiali as Group Director of Mobile, with effect from1 September 2003. Mobile is a fast growing part of Cable & Wireless' national telecommunications businesses in, for example, the Caribbean, Macau and Panama.
