3G network goes live on Isle of Man

mmO2 (formerly BTWireless) has said that it expects to delay the commercial rollout of its 3G networks by six months, due to an expected lack of 3G handsets. Peter Erskine, chief executive of mmO2 said that the company had planned to start selling 3G handsets in the middle of next year, but this will now be delayed until 2003. Possible delay to 3G launch in Portugal

The Portuguese GSM network, and 3G license holder, OniWay has said that it may have to delay the planned launch of its 3G network from the expected 21st November date. The company is waiting to see the results of trials by DoCoMo and Manx Telecom before making any further statements. First large scale 3G field test due this week

Siemens is expected to conduct the first large scale test of a UMTS network later this week in the Isle of Man. Siemens is working with NEC to build the 3G network for Manx Telecom and the test will involve about 400 users testing high speed data as well as conventional voice calls.
