Police Recover Over 130 BlackBerry's from Criminal Gang
Police officers from the Narpoli police station in India's maharashtra State, just outside Mumbai have arrested a criminal gang which were involved in several robberies in the area. The police recovered a total of 131 BlackBerry phones from the robbers. more

Indian Government Close to Releasing Withheld 2G Spectrum
India's Department of Telecom (DoT) has given an in principle clearance for Idea Cellular, Vodafone Essar and Aircel to be granted the outstanding 2G spectrum where they currently hold licences, a DoT source told The Economic Times. Currently the operators all hold licenses in some circles, but have not been able to launch their services until the spectrum was released to them. more

Indian Regulator Orders Tariff Changes
India's regulator, TRAI has issued an order to the mobile network operators in the States of maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh not to charge differential tariffs for calls terminating in BSNL network and other service providers networks. Following a license amendment, calls between Mumbai Metro & maharashtra Telecom Circle, Chennai Metro & Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle, Kolkata Metro & West Bengal Telecom Circle and UP (East) & UP (West) Telecom Circle Service Areas were treated as intra-service area calls for the purpose of call routing and levy of ADC. more

Call quality deteriorates in parts of India
India's cellular network operators are required to submit quarterly Performance Reports of their networks under their service area in the format prescribed by the telecoms regulator (TRAI). The Authority has laid down benchmarks for a number of QoS parameters, so as to monitor the Quality of Service being given by the operators to their customers. In this quarter, 82 number of the mobile service providers have reported their QoS performance. more

Motorola wins Indian GSM and GPRS contract
Bharti Enterprises has chosen Motorola to install a GSM network, including GPRS services in the telecom circles of western India. The three year contract has a total value of US$70 million. The contract covers the highly populated western region of India namely the city of Mumbai as well as the States of maharashtra and Gujarat. The first phase of the contract is scheduled to be completed in early 2002 and will have a capacity of nearly one million mobile subscribers. When all the phases are complete, the network will support over two million subscribers. more
