Call quality deteriorates in parts of India
India's cellular network operators are required to submit quarterly Performance Reports of their networks under their service area in the format prescribed by the telecoms regulator (TRAI). The Authority has laid down benchmarks for a number of QoS parameters, so as to monitor the Quality of Service being given by the operators to their customers. In this quarter, 82 number of the mobile service providers have reported their QoS performance. more

Motorola winning Indian contracts
Motorola has announced business wins of wireless equipment agreements worth over US$307 million from leading Indian operators BSNL, MTNL, and Tata Teleservices. These agreements include deployment of new networks, as well as expansion and up-grades of existing networks for both GSM communications and CDMA systems. Of the US$307 million in announced wins, substantially all of the orders were reported in 2003 and the majority of the revenue is expected to be recognized in 2004. more

Further consolidation in India's GSM market
India's GSM network operator, IDEA is to buy the GSM operators, Escotel Mobile (EMCL) and Escorts Telecommunications (ETL). The transaction includes 6 telecom licenses and more than 825,000 subscribers. In an all cash transaction, IDEA has entered into a share purchase agreement with the sponsors of EMCL and ETL, i.e. Escorts and First Pacific, to buy their 100% equity stake in these companies. more

Motorola deploys CDMA softswitch
Motorola has successfully completed the first deployment of its innovative SoftSwitch for CDMA (MSS-C) on a CDMA2000 1X network for Tata Teleservices in the maharashtra circle in Western India. In addition to installing the groundbreaking MSS-C solution, Motorola was able to assemble the network in Nagpur in only six weeks, with actual deployment completed in just seven days. Tata Teleservices launched its mobile service network in early July. more

The Indian High Court in Chennai has upheld a legal complaint by Motorola against BPL Cellular over unpaid bills totaling US$25 million. BPL is now required to make payments to Motorola in quarterly installments within 20 months or any other payment schedule mutually agreed by both companies. BPL defaulted on the payments, but had contested Motorola's court action, saying the Motorola had been late in its deliveries. more
Motorola wins Indian GSM and GPRS contract
Bharti Enterprises has chosen Motorola to install a GSM network, including GPRS services in the telecom circles of western India. The three year contract has a total value of US$70 million. The contract covers the highly populated western region of India namely the city of Mumbai as well as the States of maharashtra and Gujarat. The first phase of the contract is scheduled to be completed in early 2002 and will have a capacity of nearly one million mobile subscribers. When all the phases are complete, the network will support over two million subscribers. more
