Telefonica's Chairman Due in Court on Insider Trading Allegations

Telefonica's Chairman, Cesar Alierta is expected to appear in court today as trial commences concerning a job he held at a tobacco company ten years ago. The Spanish prosecutor is alleging that he knew of an impending takeover of the tobacco firm, Tabacalera by US based Havatampa - and profited by US$2.5 million from share purchases just prior to the announcement.  more

Verizon Announces LTE Deployment Plans - Going Live in 2010

Verizon's CTO, Dick Lynch has outlined the company's plans to roll out an LTE upgrade for its wireless network. Lynch announced that Verizon Wireless has selected Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent as primary network vendors for its initial LTE network deployments. These two vendors are expected to build the underlying infrastructure that will enable Verizon Wireless to become the first wireless company to offer commercial LTE-based service in the United States, starting in 2010.  more

Vodafone Spain Tests 20Mbps Mobile Download Speeds

Nokia Siemens Wins High Speed GSM-R Contract

Nokia Siemens Networks has won a contract to provide, operate and maintain a complete GSM-R network for SpainÃ's rail administration ADIF to cover some 450 kilometers of the newly constructed high-speed tracks linking madrid with the cities of Valencia and Albacete. Nokia Siemens Networks remains the sole mobile communications supplier for ADIF high-speed lines designed for trains known as AVE.  more

Spanish Children Treated for Cellphone Addiction

Two Spanish students are being treated for an addiction to cellphones at a psychiatric centre in northeastern Spain, the El Mundo newspaper has reported. They are reported to have been given a mobile phone some 18 months ago and managed to spend an average of five to six hours per day using them.  more

Qualcomm Buys Spanish Fleet Management Firm

Qualcomm's European subsidiary has acquired substantially all the assets of madrid-based Ronda Grupo Consultor, a provider in the development, establishment and operation of fleet management systems (FMS) for the transportation and logistics industry in Spain and Portugal.
