Cellular M2M Connections to Triple by 2014

­Cellular M2M connections - which enable wireless data calls between machines - will approximately triple their current number of about 75 million by 2014, according to a new study from ABI Research. Europe's Top 10 Operators - Still producing robust growth

Although the 100% penetration level was reached in Q1 of this year, mobile growth has not slowed to any great extent and in fact, the third quarter saw more new connections than either of the earlier quarters, with 20.14m new connections, against 14.5m in the second and 16.3m in the first. Curiously, the 20m figure is almost exactly the same number as in both Q3 06 and Q3 05, when net additions totalled 20.4m and 20.2m respectively. more

SonyEricsson to develop rugged telematics module

Sony Ericsson says that it has commenced the development of a new Rugged Cellular Communication Module, the GM46, intended for embedded applications where operation in harsh environments is a requirement, such as Automotive and Industrial applications. The GM46 will be a tri-mode module capable of operating in GSM, AMPS, and TDMA. It will also support class 8 GPRS packet data communications, which along with its tri-mode and ruggedness features, will make it unique in the industry. more
