95 Million Cellular M2M Modules to Ship in 2013
Continued strong growth in m2m (machine-to-machine) communications markets will see about 95 million cellular m2m modules shipping in 2013, according to ABI Research. Of shipments to the three main market segments - telematics, telemetry, and wireless local loop - about 34 million devices are expected to be for telematics and 39 million for telemetry. more

Mobile Operators Reclaiming the Machine-to-Machine Connectivity Market
The m2m (machine-to-machine) connectivity market has always seemed to be the playground of specialists: mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) and m2m mobile operators (MMOs). These aggregators, such as Jasper Wireless and Aeris Communications, have garnered most of the limelight in recent years. more

ATM/POS Cellular Embedded Module Markets Growing Strongly
While global shipments of POS and ATM terminals are expected to increase by about 50% over the next five years, the number of cellular embedded modules that are used to connect these terminals to financial institutions will increase approximately fivefold in the same period. This ratio highlights a strong and growing trend to equip POS/ATM terminals with cellular connectivity. more

Security Alarm Backhaul is Going Wireless
Traditionally, security alarm systems used fixed telephone lines to pass information from the security alarm panel to a central monitoring facility. Today, however, that communication is increasingly being delegated to a digital cellular link. ABI Research forecasts that the 2007 number of just fewer than 2.5 million wireless security alarm connections will increase to more than 7.5 million in 2013. more

Sprint-Clearwire Split No Threat to WiMAX for M2M
The recent statement by Sprint and Clearwire announcing the end of their proposed WiMAX partnership may have sent shudders through planners hoping that WiMAX will facilitate machine-to-machine (m2m) communications in the future. But according to ABI Research, there's no need to get nervous. more

M2M Vendors Focus on Service Offerings to Counter the Threat of Commoditization
Wavecom, a m2m wireless module vendor, recently announced a partnership with m2m mobile operator Jasper Wireless to offer Wavecom's "StarService" on Jasper Wireless' global service platform. StarService, which enables customers to obtain the WM50 module from Wavecom for free with the remote device management service, is an interesting approach toward ameliorating the commoditization pressures facing the wireless module industry. These pressures include tightening gross margins in the short term, and anxiety over possible obsolescence of modules in the m2m value chain over the longer term, as wireless connectivity potentially becomes directly integrated into end-equipment. more

Increased Interest in WiMAX Will Impact the Cellular M2M Market
Sam Lucero, ABI Research senior analyst, states, "Sprint and Clearwire are the two most significant service providers deploying WiMAX in the United States. Sprint, a CDMA-based operator, has selected WiMAX as its path to 4G service offerings. Sprint will work with Clearwire - a Craig McCaw startup that has received $600 million in venture backing from Intel and $300 million from Motorola - to provide joint coverage to each other's respective customers on the nationwide WiMAX networks deployed by the two companies." more

Cellular Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communications Revenues to Quadruple by 2012
3G to Capture 30% of M2M Market, but don't Ignore Municipal Wi-Fi"
Cellular Machine-to-Machine (m2m) communications first started in the era of analog cellular connectivity, and have largely shifted now to 2G GPRS and CDMA connectivity. Certain m2m applications can benefit from the higher data rates than 3G cellular offers, and it is tempting to assume that all m2m communications will be 3G eventually. more
