China Telecom Offers Free Mobile Internet Access as Prepares for 3G Launch

China Telecom, which recently took over the CDMA network formerly owned by China Unicom has started offering free mobile internet access as it prepares to roll out its 3G network upgrade in the capital city. The South China Morning Post reported that new subscribers will get between 20 and 50 megabytes of free internet usage per month, depending on their tariff. more

Five Firms Win Multi-Billion Dollar Chinese 3G Tender

Huawei, Motorola and Ericsson are reported to have been the biggest winners in the latest WCDMA infrastructure tender from China Unicom, industry sources have told the South China Morning Post. The firm believed to have issued a tender to cover 55 cities in 30 provinces - the first stage in a rollout to cover 282 cities with a total CAPEX of around US$11 billion during 2009. more

China's government is reported to be considering another delay in offering 3G licenses, partly to give more time for the home grown TD-SCDMA technology to iron out problems, and partly for economic reasons. more

China to Allocate Additional Spectrum to 3G Networks

It has been reported that China is planning to allocate additional radio spectrum to the homegrown 3G service, by taking it from the low-cost XiaoLingTong local area wireless service. Xie Feipo, from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that the ministry had asked fixed-line operators to return the PHS radio spectrum so it could be reassigned to the TD-SCDMA network. more

Nokia Expects to Support China's TD-SCDMA Standard

Nokia is planning to support all three of the proposed 3G standards in China by releasing handsets for each of the networks. It is anticipated that China Mobile will use the Chinese developed 3G standard, TD-SCDMA, while China Telecom will use CDMA2000 and China Unicom will use WCDMA. more

China Telecom Planning $4 Billion CDMA Investment

China Telecom, which is in the process of taking over China Unicom's CDMA network has issued tenders for a network expansion - with the initial contracts expected to be awarded within a few weeks. The key aim of the contract is to increase coverage areas rather than boost the quality of service in areas already under CDMA coverage. more

Spatial Wireless has announced that its Spatial Atrium Distributed Mobile Switching Center (DMSC) product was used as the switching element in China Unicom's GSm1x phase one technology trial. The GSm1x solution enables China Unicom to introduce enhanced CDMA2000 1X services to its GSM subscribers in China. more
