China Mobile Denies Seeking a Stake South Africa's MTN Group

Reports in the media that China Mobile Communications Corp. (CMCC) is seeking a partner for a takeover of South Africa's MTN Group have been denied by the firm. Five Firms Win Multi-Billion Dollar Chinese 3G Tender

Huawei, Motorola and Ericsson are reported to have been the biggest winners in the latest WCDMA infrastructure tender from China Unicom, industry sources have told the South China Morning Post. The firm believed to have issued a tender to cover 55 cities in 30 provinces - the first stage in a rollout to cover 282 cities with a total CAPEX of around US$11 billion during 2009.  more

China Mobile Close to Launching 3G "Google Phone"

China Mobile is reported to be nearing a launch of a smartphone based on the Google backed, Android operating system - a source close the matter told the South China Morning Post. The handset, codenamed the OPhone will also run on China Mobile's new TD-SCDMA 3G network.  more

Chinese 3G Investment to Top $29 Billion

The Chinese government expects that the country's three mobile phone networks will spend at least 200 billion yuan (US$29 billion) on its 3G networks as soon as the licenses are formally awarded - although this is lower than had been expected by some analysts.  more

China Should Adopt Technology Neutrality for 3G Services

China to Allocate Additional Spectrum to 3G Networks

It has been reported that China is planning to allocate additional radio spectrum to the homegrown 3G service, by taking it from the low-cost XiaoLingTong local area wireless service. Xie Feipo, from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that the ministry had asked fixed-line operators to return the PHS radio spectrum so it could be reassigned to the TD-SCDMA network.  more

China Mobile Seeking Cut-Down Version of Apple's iPhone

China Mobile is expected to officially launch the Apple iPhone on its network shortly - but with some of the functionality removed to comply with Chinese regulations. The South China Morning Post, citing a report from the Daiwa Institute of Research said that the 3G and Wi-Fi services would be disabled on the Chinese model.  more

Nokia Expects to Support China's TD-SCDMA Standard

Nokia is planning to support all three of the proposed 3G standards in China by releasing handsets for each of the networks. It is anticipated that China Mobile will use the Chinese developed 3G standard, TD-SCDMA, while China Telecom will use CDMA2000 and China Unicom will use WCDMA.  more

China Mobile Expanding its 3G Trial to More Cities

China Mobile Communications Corp, the parent company of Hong Kong listed China Mobile is planning to expand its TD-SCDMA 3G trials to more cities. The operator is currently trialling the network in eight cities, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen and Qinhuangdao.  more
