Telefonica Announces Wide-Spread Trials of LTE Networks
Telefonica says that it has reached an agreement with six lte technology providers to launch lte test projects in six different countries. The suppliers Telefonica has chosen so far: Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, NEC, Nokia Siemens Networks and ZTE, will start rolling out the equipment necessary for testing the technology during the coming months. more

ZTE and Qualcomm Collaborate to Boost UMTS System Performance
Qualcomm and ZTE have announced a collaboration to integrate Qualcomm's Uplink Interference Cancellation (ULIC) technology into ZTE's next-generation UMTS base station products. Qualcomm sasy that this can boost operators UMTS data throughput by up to 60 percent and deliver a user experience that is comparable to lte in a similar channel bandwidth. The technology also enables UMTS operators to increase voice capacity by up to 45 percent. more

3G-4G to Account for 30% of Global Wireless Subscriptions by 2013
At the end of 2008, only 11% of worldwide wireless subscriptions were 3G. By the end of 2013, the percentage of 3G and 4G subscriptions will reach 30%, reports In-Stat. This trend is reflected in fourth quarter 2008 wireless infrastructure contract awards. more

Voice over LTE Initiative Launched
A group of leaders in the wireless industry comprised of Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, Kineto Wireless, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nortel, Samsung, Starent Networks, T-Mobile and ZTE have announced a joint effort, referred to as the Voice over lte via Generic Access (VoLGA) Forum. The joint effort aims to define a set of specifications within the forum for enabling delivery of voice services over lte access networks based on the current 3GPP Generic Access Network (GAN) standard. more
