Nortel Forms WiMAX Partnership with Alvarion

Nortel says that it has realigned its wireless broadband strategy to address early market opportunities that are emerging for WiMAX and lte. As part of this strategy, Nortel is focusing its main wireless R&D resources on lte and wireless applications, with WiMAX development re-aligning around an agreement with Alvarion to create an end-to-end WiMAX solution.  more

WiMAX Subs to Exceed 100 Million by 2014

Research and analysis firm, Maraved is forecasting in a new report that WiMAX subscribers to exceed 100 million by 2014. "WiMAX chipsets will start to be embedded in laptops in the second half of 2008, into handheld devices in 2009, and into consumer electronics by early 2010," said Adlane Fellah, President and CEO of Maravedis and co-author of the report. "This is definitely a key assumption, as large-scale WiMAX deployments by companies such as BSNL and Sprint start to materialize in 2008-2009 despite current challenges."  more

Testing 3G Evolution on Vodafone and T-Mobile's German Networks

Alcatel- Lucent has announced that it is to start field-tests of 3G evolution platforms in Germany running tests at several Vodafone and T-Mobile locations. The testing, part of an initiative by the Enablers for Ambient Services and Systems Consortium (EASY-C), involves wireless communications technologies expected to play key roles in future mobile networking standards including "4G" systems. The EASY-C is sponsored by the German Ministry for Education and Research.  more
