Spirent Communications has released the first commercially-available single-source solution for automated testing of GSM and WCDMA handsets that support Assisted GPS (A-GPS) location technology. Spirent's new product, UMTS Location Test System (ULTS), builds on Spirent's location test expertise, gained through global leadership in GPS simulation solutions for receiver performance evaluation and through the market-leading Spirent Position Location Test System (PLTS) for CDMA. more

Europe commissions study into location based emergency services
Helios Technology has been selected as management consultants to assist the European Commission in developing a Europe-wide implementation strategy for enhanced emergency service, otherwise known as E-112. This service aims to provide the location of a mobile phone direct to the local emergency service, enabling a faster response to the incident, and is similar to the E911 service being developed in the USA. more
Two more networks sign up for location based services
TeleCommunication Systems, which develops location based services has secured service agreements with two USA cellular networks, Corr Wireless Communications and MetroPCS. Under the agreements, TCS will provide the backbone wireless location technology and service components, via its Xypoint Location Platform, that enable wireless carriers to meet their regulatory obligations under the FCC's E911 order to be able to locate cellular phone users to within 100 yards. With these agreements, TCS is now able to provide wireless location services in more than twenty states to twenty wireless carriers, including Verizon Wireless, U.S. Cellular and Cricket Communications. more
