Smart Mobile Device Shipments Jump 53% to 118 Million in 2007

The latest market data from analyst firm Canalys shows how much the converged device market (all smart phones and wireless handhelds) has grown over the past year. These, typically high-end, devices represented around 10% of the global mobile phone market by units in 2007, with annual growth of 60% making them one of the fastest growing segments of the technology industry. Year-on-year growth climbed every quarter throughout 2007, to reach a peak of 72% in Q4.  more

Mobile Linux Group Gains New Associate Member

Purple Labs, a supplier of embedded linux solutions for mobile phones, has announced that it has joined the LiMo Foundation, which is developing a linux based software platform for mobile phones. In joining the LiMo Foundation as an Associate member, Purple Labs becomes the first commercial linux platform for feature phones in the consortium.  more

China's Smartphone Sales up 5.2% in Q3 2007

China's CCID Consulting says that it saw a 5.2% increase is sales in China's smart phone business in Q3 '07, compared to Q2'07. CCID Consulting released its latest data showing that the sales volume of China's smart phones reached 6.388 million sets in Q3, up 5.2% over Q2; sales revenue reached 16.61 billion Yuan, increasing 11.3% on a month-on-month basis. With students buying phones during the summer vacation and with promotions during the Chinese national holiday, the smart phone market created highs in sales volume.  more

Linux to be the Fastest-Growing Smartphone OS over the Next 5 Years

Motorola Updates Mobile Linux Platform

Motorola has announced a new mobile linux platform for use within mobile phones. In the next few years, up to 60% of Motorola's handset portfolio is expected to be based on linux, with the new MOTOMAGX platform playing a key role in supporting this strategy. This is evident in the first products based on the MOTOMAGX platform: the music-optimized MOTOROKR Z6 and the Motorola RAZR2 V8 handsets, available now in select markets worldwide. The RAZR2 V8 will be Motorola's first linux-based device bound for North America. more
