Shipments of Cell Phones Return to Growth in Q2

Global shipments of cell phones in the second quarter climbed 4.7 percent compared to the first, marking the first sequential increase for the market since the third quarter of 2008, according to iSuppli Corp. Worldwide shipments amounted to 265 million units in the second quarter, up from 253 million in the first.  more

LG Shows Off Windows Mobile Phone with 3D Menus

lg Electronics has shown off its first Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone that has been integrated with lg's 3D S-Class User Interface. Built-around a 3D cube layout, the S-Class UI eliminates nested menus wherever possible, providing more direct access to features and applications. A simple flick of a finger rotates the cube so that any one of its five faces can be accessed instantly.  more

lg Electronics has shown off a new camera phone with an Intelligent Shot Mode that makes it easy to take pictures by automatically analyzing scenes and adjusting camera settings accordingly. This second incarnation of Viewty, the Smart (lg-GC900) offers an 8 megapixel sensor with sensitivity up to ISO 1600, a higher resolution WVGA touchscreen, a more intelligent image processor and lg's easy-to-use S-Class User Interface (UI).  more

Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown

Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units.  more

LG Electronics, Intel Collaborate on Future Mobile Internet Device

lg Electronics and Intel have announced a collaboration around mobile Internet devices (MIDs) based on Intel's MID hardware platform, codenamed "Moorestown," and Linux-based Moblin v2.0 software platform. The lg device is expected to be one of the first Moorestown designs to market.  more
