The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 31.9 million units, 36.1% higher than the 23.5 million units shipped in 2007. more

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Worldwide sales of mobile phones to end-users reached more than 309 million units in the third quarter of 2008, a 6 per cent increase compared to the third quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Financial Crisis Hits Western European Mobile Phone Market
The Western European mobile phone industry felt the impact of the global financial crisis in the third quarter of 2008, as total handset shipments decreased significantly over previous quarters. Mobile phone manufacturers shipped 45.8 million handsets in 3Q08, down 8.0% from the previous year and up 5.1% over 2Q08. The third quarter has historically been a ramp-up period as manufacturers load their sales channels with handsets in preparation for the holiday season, resulting in year-on-year growth as high as 20%. However, this year has not witnessed a similar ramp up, largely due to the current economic situation. more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Increased 12% in Q2 of 2008
Worldwide sales of mobile phones reached close to 305 million units in the second quarter of 2008, a 11.8 percent increase over the second quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Sales of mobile phones in the mature markets of Western Europe and North America slightly recovered after a difficult start. Western Europe reached close to 42 million units while North America surpassed 44 million units in the second quarter of 2008. more
