First Active Handover Between LTE and CDMA Networks Demonstrated

­lg and Nortel have demonstrated the world's first 3GPP standards compliant active handover of a data transmission between a LTE network and a CDMA network. Inter-technology handover allowing mobile users the ability to move between LTE and CDMA networks without losing data connectivity means that operators can run these networks concurrently without impacting services. This will help to ensure that users have full network coverage while taking advantage of LTE speeds, wherever initially available.  more

Fitch Revises Outlook to Negative on Samsung & LG Electronics

Fitch Ratings says that it has revised its rating Outlook on Samsung Electronics (SEC) and lg Electronics (lgE) to Negative from Stable. At the same time, Hynix Semiconductor's (Hynix) Long-term foreign currency (FC) IDR and senior unsecured debt ratings, which are currently at 'B+', remain on Rating Watch Negative (RWN).  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down by 5% in Q4 '08

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. LG Electronics Cuts Costs to Weather Economic Slowdown

lg Electronics (lgE) has announced that in response to the general economic downturn, it is targeting a reduction in expenses of KRW 3 trillion in 2009. This company-wide initiative, which includes headquarters and all 82 subsidiaries around the world, also applies to manufacturing and indirect costs.  more

LG Reports Record Quarterly Loss - Sees Tough Year Ahead

South Korea's lg Electronics has swung to a record fourth quarter loss on slowing handset and flat-screen sales - and warned that it sees little upside for the rest of 2009. The firm reported a net loss of KRW 671 billion (US$493 million) on sales of KRW 6.59 trillion (US$4.84 billion).  more

On 14 January 2009, Nortel Networks moved beyond talk of divestiture and speculation of bankruptcy, and filed for creditor protection in Canada and the US, with Nortel UK entering administration separately under a filing managed by Ernst & Young. The company reached this point after multiple management regimes failed in their attempts to remake the company after the bursting of the telecoms bubble. Nortel's move may result in a more balanced industry structure for communications equipment.  more

LG Demos LTE Mobile Data Download speeds of 60 Mbps

lg Electronics has developed the first handset modem chip based on LTE standards - which can theoretically support wireless download speeds of 100Mbps and upload speeds of 50Mbps. lg demonstrated the chip today at its Mobile Communication Technology Research Lab in Anyang, Korea, achieving wireless download speeds of 60 Mbps and upload speeds of 20 Mbps.  more
