Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Increased 12% in Q2 of 2008
Worldwide sales of mobile phones reached close to 305 million units in the second quarter of 2008, a 11.8 percent increase over the second quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Sales of mobile phones in the mature markets of Western Europe and North America slightly recovered after a difficult start. Western Europe reached close to 42 million units while North America surpassed 44 million units in the second quarter of 2008. more

Nokia and Samsung Continue Gains as Mobile Phone Volume Rises 13.8%
The worldwide mobile phone market grew at a healthy pace during the third quarter of 2007 with vendors shipping a total of 289.1 million units, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. Worldwide shipments were up 9.0% from the previous quarter and 13.8% from the same quarter a year ago. Growth was driven by a combination of high-volume shipments of affordable handsets into emerging markets and high-end, feature-packed devices into mature markets. The leading vendors improved both revenues and profits, in some cases building on double-digit operating profit margins as they balance their product portfolios. more

LG Electronics Reports Strong Q3 Profits on Handset Sales
South Korea's lg Electronics has reported that its sales in the third quarter of 2007 jumped 11.8% to KRW 9.91 trillion (US$10.68 billion). Operating profit recorded KRW 362 billion (US$390 million), which makes the profit margin at 3.6%, 1.3% point higher than the previous year. more

Motorola Mobile-Handset Struggles Benefit Rivals
Motorola's poor second-quarter performance in the global mobile handset market helped boost the results of its competitors, most notably Samsung Electronics, according to a preliminary ranking from iSuppli. In the second quarter, Motorola of the United States shipped 35.5 million mobile handsets, a 21.8 percent decline from 45.4 million in the first quarter of 2007. Company market share plunged to 13.3 percent, down 4.6 points from 17.9 percent in the first quarter. more
